Laimonis A Laimins serves as the Chair of the Department of Microbiology-Immunology and holds the prestigious Guy and Anne Youmans Professor title at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. His leadership extends across multiple research centers including the Center for Genetic Medicine, Center for Human Immunobiology, Center for Reproductive Science, and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Laimins' research focuses on the molecular biology of human papillomavirus (HPV) pathogenesis, with particular emphasis on how HPV interacts with host DNA damage repair pathways and evades innate immune responses. His laboratory pioneered the use of organotypic tissue culture systems to study HPV replication in differentiating epithelial cells. Current research examines R-loop formation, viral manipulation of DNA repair mechanisms, and the roles of viral oncoproteins E6 and E7 in oncogenesis.
Analysis of Dr. Laimins' recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the intersection between HPV replication and cellular DNA damage response pathways. His work demonstrates how HPV exploits host repair mechanisms for viral replication while simultaneously suppressing innate immune responses. The research spans virology, molecular biology, cancer research, and immunology, with particular emphasis on cervical cancer pathogenesis.
His scientific contributions have been recognized with numerous awards including:
- Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2017)
- Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (2008)
- NIH Merit Award (2008)
- Annual Sexually Transmitted Disease Grand Rounds Lecture at Indiana University (2013)
Dr. Laimins maintains active editorial roles as a board member for Virology (2001-present) and Journal of Virology (2000-present). His laboratory team includes postdoctoral fellows and research staff working on various aspects of HPV biology. The lab has received continuous NIH funding, including a prestigious Merit Award, supporting their investigation into HPV life cycle mechanisms and their relationship to cancer development.
His research program spans multiple collaborative initiatives through Northwestern's Center for Genetic Medicine, Center for Human Immunobiology, and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of his work bridging virology, cancer biology, and immunology.
