Carolyn Riehl is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Education Policy at Columbia University's Graduate School of Education, Health & Psychology. Her work bridges sociology of education, organizational studies, and policy analysis, focusing on leadership, equity, and data-driven practices in schools. She has served as a high school English teacher and held faculty positions at the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
- Education: Ph.D. in Sociology and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University; M.A. in Sociology from New York University; Teacher Certification from University of Wisconsin-Madison; B.A. in Sociology from Valparaiso University.
Riehl’s research explores intersections between educational leadership, organizational dynamics, and policy. She examines how policies translate into school practices, particularly in underserved communities, and advocates for complementary research methods to address complex educational challenges. Her recent projects analyze data use in elementary schools (Spencer Foundation-funded) and civic collaborations in education reform (Wallace Foundation-funded).
Her publications span topics including instructional rounds, family-school partnerships, cross-sector collaborations, and institutional barriers in urban schools. Riehl is affiliated with the TC Partnership Schools Consortium in Harlem and mentors school principals through the Cahn Fellows Program. She co-chaired an AERA task force and chaired AERA’s Ethics Committee.
