
Carolina Garriga

Carolina Garriga is a Professor in the Department of Government at the University of Essex (UK) and a Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics (2024–2025). She is also a Fellow at the National Institute for Economic and Social Research (NIESR). Her research focuses on international and comparative political economy, central bank governance, and the political economy of foreign direct investment. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh.
Her current research examines central bank mandates, public trust in central banks, and the economic consequences of criminal violence. Key projects include a British Academy/Leverhulme-funded study on central bank governance and an Academy of Medical Sciences-funded analysis of organized crime's impact on FDI.
She has published in leading journals such as the Journal of Politics, International Studies Quarterly, and Journal of Peace Research. She co-created a global dataset on central bank independence covering 190 countries since 1970.
Prof. Garriga previously served as an Associate Professor at Mexico’s Centre for Research and Teaching in Economics (CIDE) and as a visiting scholar at Argentina’s Torcuato Di Tella University. She currently serves as Deputy Director of the Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis.
