Professor Carolina Garriga is a leading scholar in the Department of Government at the University of Essex, specializing in international and comparative political economy, central bank governance, and Latin American politics. Currently on research leave (2024-2025), she concurrently holds a Visiting Professorship at the London School of Economics. She also serves as an affiliated professor at CIDE (Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas) in Mexico and has held roles at institutions like Torcuato Di Tella University.
Her academic background includes a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, an MA in European Union Law from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and a BA in International Relations from the Catholic University of Córdoba. She has held progressive roles at the University of Essex, including Deputy Director of the Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis (2022-2024) and Director of Diversity and Inclusion in her department (2019-2022).
Her research focuses on central bank independence, FDI political economy, monetary institutions in developing nations, and conflict economics. Notable projects include studies on the governance of central banks, the impact of organized crime on FDI in Mexico, and the relationship between inflation volatility and institutional frameworks. She has published extensively in top journals like Journal of Politics, International Studies Quarterly, and Journal of Conflict Resolution.
