Dr. Brian Phillips is a Reader in the Department of Government at the University of Essex, specializing in the organizational dynamics of terrorism, civil conflict, and crime. His research has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of Politics and Comparative Political Studies, and he co-authored the book Insurgent Terrorism: Intergroup Relationships and the Killing of Civilians (Oxford University Press). He currently co-leads the ESRC-funded Multilingualism, Conflict, and Conflict Resolution in Africa (MCCRA) project and is editing a book on terrorism studies with Bloomsbury. Phillips has held roles as Associate Editor of Terrorism and Political Violence and served on editorial boards of major journals. His work explores topics like terrorist group survival, counterterrorism strategies, and the crime-terror nexus, with funding from the US National Science Foundation and Mexico's Presidency. Before academia, he served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps infantry.
