Dr Helena Hinkkainen is an Associate Professor in Security, Conflict Studies, and Governance at the University of Leeds, within the School of Politics and International Studies (Faculty of Social Sciences). Her career includes roles as Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Lincoln (2013–2017), University Academic Fellow at the University of Leeds (2017–2019), and Lecturer in Politics at the University of York (2019–2021). She has also been a visiting researcher at Uppsala University and the University of Venice (2019).

Research Interests:
Her work focuses on terrorism, civil wars, and conflict dynamics. Key areas include micro-dynamics of violence, diffusion of conflict, economic sanctions and terrorism, child soldiers, peacekeeping, and state use of militias. Current projects include an ESRC grant on mass atrocity crimes by non-state armed groups and a Swedish Research Council project on secondary mobilization of political violence.
