Dr. Florian G. Kern is an Associate Professor (Reader) at the Department of Government, University of Essex, and a Visiting Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics' Department of Methodology. He holds a PhD from the University of Konstanz and an MA from SAIS, Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on comparative politics, particularly the political economy of development, governance, and conflict in Africa and Indigenous North America. Key themes include multilingualism and conflict resolution, land rights, and research transparency in qualitative methods.
He leads projects such as the ESRC-funded Multilingualism, Conflict and Conflict Resolution in Africa (MCCRA) and co-founded networks like the International Politics in Africa (IPIA) and Age and Power in Africa (AaPiA). His work has been supported by grants from the ESRC, Bosch Foundation, and German Foundation for Peace Research. He serves on the British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) research committee and is Co-Director of the Africa Special Interest Group at Essex.
Dr. Kern's research combines mixed methods, including experimental approaches, surveys, and fieldwork. Recent publications address traditional governance institutions in Africa, judicial systems in Indigenous nations, and methodological innovations in qualitative research. His contributions emphasize rigorous, transparent methodologies and interdisciplinary collaboration.
