Dr. Sebastian Alvarez is a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Zurich's Research Center for Social and Economic History and an Associate Member of Oxford University's History Faculty. His research focuses on 20th-century financial dynamics, particularly sovereign debt, international banking, and the causes of the Latin American debt crisis of the 1980s. He employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, with notable contributions to understanding Mexico's banking sector and Brazil's financial strategies.
- Education:
- PhD in Economic and Social History, University of Geneva
- MA in Economics, University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne
- Bachelor in Economics, National University of Córdoba, Argentina
His work bridges economic history and political economy, examining how peripheral economies navigated global financial systems. Recent publications analyze Argentina's military regime's nationalization policies, Banco do Brasil's evasion of IMF constraints, and interwar banking crises in Argentina.
His 2019 book Mexican Banks and Foreign Finance: From Internationalization to Financial Crisis, 1973-82 (Palgrave Macmillan) details how foreign capital flows destabilized Mexico's financial system. Articles frequently explore regulatory failures, cross-border banking networks, and debt crisis diplomacy.
- Awards:
- Prix de la Relève 2016 (Swiss Academy of Humanities)
- SNSF, EU Commission, and French Government fellowships
Alvarez has held visiting positions at Fundação Getulio Vargas (São Paulo) and NYU. His current projects investigate the role of Euromarkets in early bank globalization and the structural roots of Latin America's 'lost decade.'
