Carlos Solar is a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Essex, where he researches security governance, cybersecurity, and civil-military relations. He holds a PhD in Politics from the University of York and previously served as a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oxford. His work examines security institutions and democratic governance patterns, particularly in Latin America.
Research interests span security governance, cybersecurity policies, civil-military relations in transitional democracies, organized crime networks, and Latin American political systems. His work combines political sociology with security studies, examining both state and non-state security actors.
Publications focus on military governance, police legitimacy, cyber defense, and human rights in Latin American contexts. Recent work explores digital authoritarianism in Venezuela, police reforms in Brazil, and military expenditures in transitioning democracies. Research employs quantitative and qualitative methodologies to analyze institutional trust and security sector reforms.
Awards include the 2016 LASA Best Article Prize from the Defence, Public Security and Democracy section. Currently supervises PhD candidates researching national security strategies, human rights, and criminology. Leads research projects on militarism and cybersecurity governance. Collaborates with international institutions including the Latin American Centre at Oxford and Wetsus research institute.
