Dr Carli Rowell is an Associate Professor in Sociology (Sociology and Criminology) at the School of Law, Politics and Sociology, University of Sussex. Her research critically examines social class, gender, and precarity within academia, with a focus on working-class women's experiences in the neoliberal university. She actively contributes to feminist and educational scholarship through publications, grants, and professional leadership.

Dr Rowell's recent publications reveal a strong thematic focus on lived experiences of marginalization in academic spaces, using collaborative autoethnography and feminist methodologies. Her work spans journals such as Learning and Teaching, Journal of International Women's Studies, and Exchanges, addressing pedagogy, inequality, and identity in higher education, particularly in the context of the pandemic and neoliberal restructuring.
She holds a grant from the Society for Research into Higher Education (2020–2026) titled '“No words, just two letters ‘Dr’”: Working-class early career researcher’s reflections on the transition to and through a social-sciences PhD and into academia,' which supports her ongoing research into class and academic transitions.
Dr Rowell is professionally active as:
