Carin Lennartsson is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Stockholm University and lecturer at Karolinska Institutet. She serves as Director of the Aging Research Center (ARC), a joint venture between Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University, and as project manager for SWEOLD (Survey on the Living Conditions of Older People). She is affiliated with the Institute for Social Research (SOFI) at Stockholm University where she conducts research on aging and social conditions of older populations.
Dr. Lennartsson's research focuses primarily on gerontology and social aspects of aging. Her work examines health trends among older populations, social and financial support between elderly parents and their adult children, determinants of health inequalities, social and economic living conditions, social participation and loneliness, and the relationship between extended working life, retirement and health outcomes. She also investigates methodological challenges specific to research on older populations.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on aging research with particular attention to loneliness, retirement transitions, and health inequalities. The articles reveal a methodologically rigorous approach combining survey data with register data, often using longitudinal designs and advanced statistical techniques. Her work frequently addresses policy-relevant questions about pension systems, social integration of older adults, and health disparities in aging populations.
Dr. Lennartsson currently leads two major research projects: a FORTE-funded study on the long-term health effects of extended working life, and a VR-funded project examining exchanges of money and care between older parents and adult children and their consequences for inequality. These projects reflect her commitment to understanding the social determinants of health in later life and their implications for policy development.
