Lena Dahlberg is a Professor of Social Work at Dalarna University and a researcher at the Aging Research Center (ARC) at Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University. She holds affiliations with the School of Health and Welfare at Dalarna University and the Social Gerontology group led by Carin Lennartsson. She earned her PhD in Political Science from Stockholm University in 2004.
Her research focuses on loneliness, social exclusion, and informal care among older adults. Key projects include the REALM (Research Programme on Ageing, Loneliness, and Mental Health) and CALL (Causes and Actions of Late-life Loneliness), funded by FORTE and Kamprad Family Foundation, respectively. She has supervised multiple PhD students, including Isabelle von Saenger (co-supervisor) and Jerry Norlin (principal supervisor).
Her articles span topics like social relationships, caregiving dynamics, and loneliness trends in Sweden. She actively participates in boards, including the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and the Nordic Welfare Centre’s expert group on loneliness.
Lena’s work bridges academic research and policy, emphasizing evidence-based interventions to address aging-related challenges. She also collaborates on projects like Healthy Ageing in Place and studies intergenerational transfers in families of the oldest-old.
