Dr Cameron Downing is a Lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of York. He holds a PhD in Psychology and completed post-doctoral training at Bangor University. Prior to his current role, he taught at Bangor University and Leeds Trinity University.

Dr Downing's research focuses on understanding typical and disordered reading and writing development. Key areas include: the co-development of spelling and handwriting skills, disorders like dyslexia affecting literacy acquisition, and the creation/evaluation of school-based assessment and intervention tools. His methodological approach combines correlational studies and experimental designs, including randomized controlled trials.
Recent research outputs include the development of the Spelling and Handwriting Legibility Test (SaHLT), investigations into remote literacy instruction efficacy, and studies on handwriting fluency correlations with cognitive skills. His work bridges cognitive psychology and educational practice, emphasizing practical applications for teaching professionals.
