She holds a BSc (1st Class), MSc, and PhD from the University of Hull, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Bryna specializes in exercise physiology, sports performance optimization, and athlete health, with a focus on thermoregulation, heat adaptation, and environmental physiology. She leads research groups including Sport Performance, Lifestyle for Health and Wellbeing, and Sports for Climate Action and Nature.
Education:
- BSc Sport, Health and Exercise Science (1st Class Honours, 2008)
- MSc Exercise Physiology & Biochemistry (2011)
- PhD Exercise Physiology (2013), all from the University of Hull.
Research Interests: Bryna investigates thermoregulatory responses in elite athletes, heat acclimation strategies, and the impact of environmental conditions on performance. Her work spans core body temperature management in sports like rugby sevens and open water swimming, as well as community health initiatives such as Qatar's Step Into Health program. She also explores recovery strategies, supplementation effects (e.g., tart cherry), and the intersection of sport and climate action.
Key Awards:
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
- Accredited by the British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences (BASES) and Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA)
Grants & Collaborations: Bryna has coordinated academic programs (e.g., Qatar's Active Healthy Kids Report Card) and led international studies on athlete preparedness in extreme environments. She actively engages with global sports organizations and health initiatives, emphasizing practical applications of her research.
Labs & Teams: Bryna contributes to the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), focusing on translating physiological research into clinical and public health interventions.
