Bryan Smyth is an Instructional Assistant Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy & Religion at the University of Mississippi, part of the College of Liberal Arts. His research focuses on Critical Theory, phenomenology (particularly Maurice Merleau-Ponty), and the interplay between nature and history. He has translated key works by Merleau-Ponty and is developing a monograph on heroism as an embodied phenomenon. Smyth holds a PhD from McGill University (2006), a DEA from the Sorbonne (2003), and degrees from the University of Waterloo. His teaching spans existential philosophy, biomedical ethics, and political philosophy.
Research interests include the normative foundations of social critique, embodied ethical exemplarity, and the mythico-political dimensions of radical thought. Recent work addresses habit, myth, and agency in transformative contexts. He has published monographs, edited volumes, and translations, including Merleau-Ponty’s Existential Phenomenology and the Realization of Philosophy (2014) and translations of Merleau-Ponty’s lectures. Current projects explore hyperdialectical materialism in Merleau-Ponty’s thought.
Publications reflect interdisciplinary engagement with Marxism, phenomenology, and literary theory. Advising and grants are not explicitly detailed, though his academic trajectory includes visiting roles at Mount Allison University and the University of Memphis. His work bridges philosophical traditions to address contemporary socio-political challenges through embodied and mythopoetic frameworks.
