Bruce Buchan is Professor at Griffith University's School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science. His research examines the intellectual history of Europe's Enlightenment with particular focus on colonial contexts, conceptual histories of political ideas, and the intersections between political thought and imperial expansion.
Education includes PhD from Australian National University (2001), MA from Flinders University (1995), and BA(Hons) from Flinders University (1990).
Research explores Scotland's Enlightenment in colonial contexts, conceptual history of piracy in European political thought, sonic profiles of mutiny, and intellectual histories of corruption and security. His work connects political theory with colonial administration and cross-cultural encounters.
Publications demonstrate strong focus on colonial knowledge systems, racial theories in Enlightenment thought, and the global circulation of ideas. Recent work examines the natural history of race, imperial naming practices, and colonial ethnography.
