Maria Florutau

Maria Florutau is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Uppsala University's Department of History of Science and Ideas, specializing in transnational Enlightenment history with focus on knowledge circulation between Eastern and Western Europe during the long eighteenth century and non-European intellectual influences.

Her work highlights peripheral agency in Enlightenment discourse, particularly Transylvanian resistance to Vienna-imposed scientific frameworks and Jakarta-based colonial knowledge production via the Batavian Society for Arts and Sciences. Current projects explore how prize questions functioned as colonial instruments and how local intellectuals negotiated imperial scientific authority.

Her publication trends reveal strong regional focus on Eastern European Enlightenment centers, with methodological emphasis on eclecticism in philosophy and non-Western contributions to enlightened thought.
