Gordon E. Jr. Brown is a leading academic in Earth & Cosmic Sciences, currently serving as Chair of the Department of Geological & Environmental Sciences at Stanford University since 2011. He holds concurrent professorships in Stanford's School of Earth Sciences, Department of Photon Science at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, and Chemical Engineering (by courtesy). His interdisciplinary career spans environmental geochemistry, synchrotron radiation applications, and high-temperature material studies.
- Appointed Dorrell William Kirby Professor of Earth Sciences (1991-present)
- Former Chair of Stanford's Department of Geology (1986-1992)
- Director of Stanford Environmental Molecular Science Institute (2004-2011)
- Chair of SLAC's Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory Faculty (1998-2007)
His research focuses on environmental chemistry at mineral-fluid interfaces, structural analysis of silicate melts using synchrotron X-ray methods, and high-temperature geochemical processes. Awards include the Ian Campbell Medal (2012) for service to geosciences, Roebling Medal (2007) for mineralogy research, and Clair C. Patterson Medal (2007) for environmental geochemistry breakthroughs. He has held advisory roles at major facilities including DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences (2011-present) and Advanced Light Source at Berkeley (1997-2000).
