John Sarrao is the sixth director of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory since October 2023, overseeing ~2,000 staff and a $700M annual budget. He holds a professorship in photon science at Stanford University, with courtesy appointments in materials science and engineering, and serves as dean of SLAC faculty. Previously, he led science and engineering at Los Alamos National Laboratory as deputy director, managing directorates in chemistry, global security, and computational science.

His research focuses on superconductivity and correlated electron systems, particularly actinide materials. He leads SLAC’s national user facilities, including the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), and FACET-II.
