Keith O. Hodgson is the David Mulvane Ehrsam and Edward Curtis Franklin Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Photon Science at Stanford University, affiliated with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. He joined Stanford's Chemistry Department in 1973 and served as Director of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) from 1998–2005, followed by roles as SLAC Deputy Director (2005–2007) and Associate Laboratory Director for Photon Science (2007–2011).
Education:
- B.S. in Chemistry, University of Virginia (1969)
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley (1972)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chemistry at ETH Zurich (1973)
Research Interests: Focuses on molecular structure-function relationships in biomolecules using synchrotron x-ray techniques. Pioneered x-ray absorption and crystallographic studies of proteins, with current projects on metalloproteins (e.g., nitrogenase, methane monooxygenase), iron-sulfur clusters, and applications of free-electron lasers like LCLS at SLAC. Develops x-ray methods to study catalytic mechanisms and biomolecular dynamics.
Awards: NATO Postdoctoral Fellow (1973).
Grants & Labs: Leads the Hodgson research group at SSRL, advancing structural molecular biology and ultrafast x-ray imaging. Pioneered synchrotron-based structural biology programs at SSRL, fostering global research collaborations.
Future Work: Explores next-generation x-ray light sources to study non-crystalline biomolecules and chemical reactivity at ultrafast timescales.
