Thomas Wolf is Lead Scientist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Principal Investigator at Stanford PULSE Institute. He serves as head of the Chemical Sciences Department within the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). His research focuses on investigating photochemical dynamics in isolated organic molecules using novel experimental tools such as ultrashort X-ray and electron pulses.
Dr. Wolf received his Master's degree in Chemistry from University of Karlsruhe, Germany in 2009, followed by a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 2012. After a postdoctoral position at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, he joined SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in 2013 as a postdoc in the Gühr research group. He has been a Principal Investigator at Stanford PULSE Institute since 2016 and became head of the Chemical Sciences Department at LCLS in 2021.
His research interests center on ultrafast photochemical dynamics, with particular focus on using X-ray free electron lasers and ultrafast electron diffraction to study molecular structure and dynamics. His group develops and applies advanced experimental techniques to investigate how molecules change structure during chemical reactions, with applications in understanding fundamental photochemical processes. The Wolf Research Group is part of the Stanford PULSE Institute at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and utilizes facilities including the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and the megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction (MeV-UED) facility.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on time-resolved molecular dynamics, particularly using electron diffraction techniques to study photochemical reactions. His work spans physical chemistry, molecular physics, and ultrafast science, with practical applications in understanding fundamental reaction mechanisms at the molecular level. Dr. Wolf has mentored researchers including Alice Green, who recently joined the Chemistry Department at University of Edinburgh after three productive years as a postdoc in his group. His team has produced significant findings, including studies on ammonia photodissociation published in Physical Review Letters.
