James P. Cryan is an Associate Professor in the Photon Science Directorate at Stanford University and Principal Investigator at the Stanford PULSE Institute. He serves as the Department Head of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Sciences at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. His research focuses on the development and application of attosecond X-ray techniques to study ultrafast electronic dynamics in atoms and molecules.
Dr. Cryan received his B.S. in Engineering Physics from The Ohio State University in 2007 and his Ph.D. in Physics from Stanford University in 2012. As a graduate student at Stanford, he participated in the first experiments at the Linac Coherent Light Source, studying a new regime of X-ray-matter interactions. He was a postdoctoral scholar at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory before returning to SLAC to lead the attosecond science group.
His research centers on photo-induced dynamics of atoms and molecules, particularly the dynamics of excited states and energy transfer processes occurring on attosecond to picosecond timescales. His work includes studying photo-triggered chemistry such as non Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics and quantum phenomena in strong-field driven systems. He develops advanced tools for studying these ultrafast dynamics in the time domain, leveraging his expertise in ultrafast optical laser science and technology.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on pushing the boundaries of attosecond science with X-ray free-electron lasers, enabling unprecedented insights into electron dynamics during chemical reactions. His work spans experimental techniques, instrumentation development, and theoretical interpretation of ultrafast phenomena.

Dr. Cryan serves on the Physical Review X Editorial Board and mentors graduate students including John Walters (Doctoral Dissertation Co-Advisor) and Erik Isele (Doctoral Dissertation Reader). His research has been supported by various grants enabling the development of cutting-edge instrumentation for ultrafast science. As Department Head of AMO Science at LCLS, he leads a team focused on advancing X-ray science capabilities for studying ultrafast electronic and molecular processes.
He leads the attosecond science group at SLAC, which develops novel techniques using X-ray free-electron lasers to probe electron dynamics on their natural timescales. The group works closely with the Stanford PULSE Institute and collaborates with researchers worldwide to apply these techniques to fundamental questions in chemistry, physics, and materials science.
