Professor Bridget Escolme holds the position of Professor of Theatre and Performance at Queen Mary University of London's Department of Drama, within the School of English and Drama. She previously worked at the University of Leeds and has a background in secondary education and theatre practice. Her academic roles include Director of Student Support in Drama and Mental Health First Aider for the School.
Escolme earned her PhD and MA at the University of Leeds, following an undergraduate degree in English Literature and PGCE in English/Drama from the University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on performance and mental health, histories of emotions, early modern drama, and theatre costume. Notable projects include collaborations with the Centre for Psychiatry on the MSc Creative Arts and Mental Health program, and co-editing series like Shakespeare in Practice and Shakespeare in the Theatre.
Her teaching spans modules on performing mental health, early modern drama, and theatre costume. Professional activities include external examining roles at multiple institutions and dramaturgical advising for major theatre companies. She has published extensively on Shakespearean performance, emotional history, and contemporary mental health theatre.
