Annalisa Castaldo is a Professor of English at Widener University, affiliated with the Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies program. She holds an MA in Literature from Johns Hopkins University (1990), a PhD in English Literature from Temple University (1999), and an MEd in Human Sexuality from Widener (2014). Her expertise spans early modern drama, gender studies, and performance studies. She has served as director of the Gender & Women’s Studies program and is currently working on a book exploring magic and gender in early modern plays.
Research Interests: Dr. Castaldo focuses on Shakespeare, early modern drama’s intersection with gender and sexuality, performance studies, and modern adaptations. She also studies medieval literature, women’s writing, and science fiction. Her MEd in Human Sexuality informs her analysis of gender across historical periods.
Media and Awards: Her work has been featured in USA Today, Discover Magazine, and Yahoo! News, discussing topics like Halloween costumes and vampire folklore. In 2019, her proposal for The Spanish Tragedy was selected for production at the Blackfriars Conference. She has also secured grant funding for student research on sexual consent (2020).
Clinical and Collaborative Work: She collaborates with the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theater, offering lectures and dramaturgical support. Her publications include edited editions of early modern plays and analyses of Shakespearean performance and cultural impact.
