Ellis's research and teaching interests center on hip-hop, music production, songwriting, and the intersection of jazz and urban music. He co-founded Revive Music Group, a key player in the NYC jazz-hip-hop fusion movement, and has worked with artists like Esperanza Spalding, Robert Glasper, and Christian Scott.
His creative output, including the EP ¡BANG! and various DJ mixes, reflects his pedagogical philosophy—using music as both art and teaching tool. These works span hip-hop, electronic production, and cultural commentary, often rooted in educational contexts.

Ellis mentors students through direct instruction and by modeling a career that blends performance, production, and education. He has not disclosed specific grant funding, but his work is supported by institutional affiliations and professional projects. His classes serve as incubators for emerging artists in hip-hop and music production.
He is actively involved with the Revive Music Group and continues to perform and produce, integrating his professional practice into his academic role. His work bridges the gap between academic music training and the evolving landscape of contemporary urban music.
