معرفی
Brian Chalmers is a Senior Lecturer (Education Focused) and Director of Teaching in the School of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews, where he has been a member of academic staff since 2016. He completed both his MChem and PhD in Chemistry at St Andrews, specializing in the chemistry of peri-substituted acenaphthenes involving phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony.
His educational background includes:
- MChem in Chemistry, University of St Andrews (2011)
- PhD in Chemistry, University of St Andrews (2015), supervised by Dr. Petr Kilian
- EPSRC Research Fellow, University of St Andrews (2015–2016)
Brian is a dedicated educator with a strong focus on practical chemistry instruction and curriculum development. He is recognized as an expert in teaching inorganic and transition metal chemistry and has led significant modernization efforts in laboratory teaching. His research interests center on main group and coordination chemistry, particularly the synthesis and structural characterization of peri-functionalized acenaphthenes, with applications in NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. His recent publications reflect a consistent focus on molecular structure, bonding interactions, and spectroscopic analysis of novel organophosphorus and organoarsenic compounds.
The trend in his scholarly output shows a sustained engagement with synthetic inorganic chemistry, structural elucidation, and pedagogical innovation. His articles emphasize experimental techniques and collaborative research, often involving advanced analytical methods.
Brian has received notable recognition for his teaching excellence:
- Best Teacher in Science Award, Students' Association Teaching Awards (2020)
- Senior Fellow of Advance HE (SFHEA)
- Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC)
Brian has contributed to numerous grants and research projects, particularly through his roles as an EPSRC Research Fellow and ongoing academic research. He supervises final-year undergraduate projects and scientific writing, contributing to student development and research training. He plays a leadership role in course development and teaching strategy as Director of Teaching.
His work is supported by extensive datasets deposited in institutional and international repositories, reflecting strong collaboration with colleagues such as Dr. Petr Kilian, Dr. Michael Buehl, and Dr. David Cordes. He is embedded in a vibrant research and teaching network within the School of Chemistry, focusing on both fundamental inorganic chemistry and educational innovation.
