Dr. Bonnie Newsom is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Maine. A citizen of the Penobscot Nation, she specializes in Indigenous archaeology focused on pre-contact Native peoples of Maine, with particular emphasis on community-engaged research, ceramic technologies, and coastal shell-bearing sites.

Her research explores how archaeological methodologies can humanize past communities through identity and agency studies. Her 2023 publications highlight collaborations using smartphone technologies for coastal site monitoring and analyses of shell heaps in Passamaquoddy Homeland.
Recent presentations and posters (2020-2021) emphasize indigenous climate change responses, community-driven research ethics, and repatriation dialogues. She has served in multiple leadership capacities including Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Penobscot Nation and University of Maine System Trustee.
