معرفی
Bill Wisden is a Professor of Molecular Neuroscience at Imperial College London and Centre Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) at Imperial. His research focuses on sleep mechanisms, neuropharmacology, and neurodegenerative diseases. He holds dual appointments in the Department of Life Sciences (Faculty of Natural Sciences) and the UK DRI. Wisden has held professorial roles since 2005, including at the University of Aberdeen and Imperial College.
He earned his MA in Zoology (University of Cambridge, 1986) and PhD in Molecular Neuroscience (University of Cambridge, 1989). His career includes postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Heidelberg and leadership roles at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology.
Research Interests:
- Neuronal circuits regulating sleep homeostasis and anesthesia
- Sleep’s role in toxin clearance and neurodegeneration (e.g., Alzheimer’s)
- Overlap between stress response and sleep-inducing pathways
Key Achievements:
- Wellcome Trust Investigator Award (2019–present)
- Discovered brain clearance reduction during sleep (2024)
- Fellow of the Royal Society (2023)
Labs/Teams: Co-leads the Franks-Wisden Lab with Prof. Nick Franks, studying sleep-dementia links using mouse models. Collaborates with the UK DRI and Imperial’s Centre for Neurotechnology.
