Professor Nick Franks is a distinguished academic in the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial College London, part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. He holds the title of Professor of Biophysics and Anaesthetics and is affiliated with the UK Dementia Research Institute and the Centre for Neurotechnology. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of general anaesthetics and the cellular and neuronal basis of natural sleep. He merged his laboratory with Professor Bill Wisden in 2012 to form the Franks-Wisden Lab, which explores sleep regulation, anaesthetic action, and their overlap with neurological conditions like dementia.
Franks' education includes a PhD in Physics from King's College London under Maurice Wilkins. His work has been supported by grants such as the Wellcome Trust Investigator Award and UK DRI funding. He advises numerous students, including current members like Tianyuan Luo and David Miao, and past researchers like Xiao Yu and Zhe Zhang.
His scientific contributions include groundbreaking studies on sleep homeostasis, anaesthetic pathways, and the role of specific neuronal circuits in sleep regulation. Awards include Fellowships from the Medical Sciences and the Royal Society. The lab's research extends to exploring how sleep aids in clearing brain toxins and its implications for neurodegenerative diseases.
Key publications highlight discoveries in sleep-preparatory behaviors, stress-induced sleep circuits, and the neurobiological effects of anaesthetics. His work bridges basic neuroscience with clinical applications, aiming to improve sedative drug design and dementia therapies.
