Betty Sommer is Associate Professor Emeritus of Social Work at Bluffton University, where she taught for 25 years and chaired Social & Behavioral Sciences. Her practice-integrated pedagogy connected classrooms with local agencies.
She specialized in mental health policy advocacy and served as fieldwork director (1986–2005), guiding students from theory to professional practice. Sommer received the 2011 Faculty/Staff Service Award for mentoring graduates who enhanced regional social services.
Post-retirement, she volunteers in adult literacy programs, continuing her commitment to educational empowerment.
