Bethan Gulliver is Associate Professor in Medical Education at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia (UEA), where she serves as Course Director for the Gateway to Medicine Programme. She is also an external examiner for the Gateway Year to Medicine at the University of Dundee and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her work is deeply embedded in educational networks including the Norwich Medical School Education Research Network, the national Foundation Year and Gateway Year Leads Network, and the National Medical Schools Widening Participation Forum.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Biochemistry from Newcastle University (awarded 1991) and a BSc in Biology (Biochemistry) from the University of Portsmouth (awarded 1988), followed by a PGCE. With over twenty years of experience in secondary and further education as a teacher, manager, examiner, and trainer, she transitioned into higher education with a strong commitment to inclusive pedagogy.
Bethan's research and teaching interests focus on inclusive learning communities, active learning strategies, and the integration of learning technologies. She promotes equitable access to medical education and contributes to national discourse on widening participation. Her recent work highlights innovative responses to educational disruption, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing student wellbeing and engagement.
Her two recent publications in the Journal of the Foundation Year Network (2021) explore supporting students during crisis and teaching practical science remotely using household resources. These articles reflect a broader trend in her scholarship: adapting medical and biosciences education to ensure accessibility, resilience, and inclusivity in challenging contexts.

Bethan has been actively involved in advising and contributing to educational initiatives and committees. She has organized and spoken at national conferences and workshops, including the Foundation Year Network Conference 2022 and the National Medical Schools Widening Participation Forum. She has also contributed to institutional outreach through the 'Spot Check on Women’s Reproductive Health and the Workplace' initiative, supporting equity in the workplace.
She leads and collaborates within several educational teams and networks, including the HUBS Fundamental Biosciences organizing team and the Norwich Medical School Education Research Network. These groups focus on strengthening foundational knowledge in biosciences and advancing medical education research.
