Bethan Garrett is a Lecturer in the Department of Educational Research at Lancaster University, part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). She holds a dual role as a member of the team developing the Morecambe Bay Curriculum, focusing on coastal education's impact on social, educational, and health disparities. Her research emphasizes place-based learning, sustainable development, and psycho-social theories of motivation, aiming to support marginalized students through alternative teaching methods.
Previously, she served as Programme Leader for an Undergraduate Education Studies programme, specializing in motivational theories, research methods, and student support. She transitioned to academia from primary education, teaching mathematics, music, and reflective practice. Her work co-convening the North-West Beach School Network involves fostering collaboration among educators and health practitioners to enhance outdoor learning practices.
Bethan’s PhD supervision interests include environmental/sustainable education, place-based learning, and educator motivation. She has led projects like the 'Morecambe Bay Curriculum Storytelling and Writing Pilot' and contributed to initiatives such as the 'Scoping Framework of Support for Outdoor Learning Practices.' Her involvement spans conferences, workshops, and research groups like the Centre for Social Justice and Wellbeing in Education.
