Bernhard Debatin is a Professor for Multimedia Policy at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Ohio University. He serves as Director of the Center for Applied and Professional Ethics and Director of Studies in the Honors Tutorial Journalism program. His roles also include coordinating the Ohio-Leipzig Double Master’s Degree Program in Journalism and Global Mass Communication.
Education: Dr. phil. in Philosophy from Technical University Berlin (1994) and M.A. in Mass Communication from Free University Berlin (1988).
Research interests span media ethics, new media, international media, mass media theory, public sphere theory, communication theory, metaphor theory, environmental journalism, and digital journalism. He emphasizes place-based approaches to teaching environmental and science journalism, integrating field trips and local watershed studies in Southeast Ohio.
Notable grants include a 2017-18 Research Apprenticeship Grant for ethics research, a NEH planning grant for a coal mining history project ($40,000), and multiple Ohio University awards for teaching and research. He has authored eight books and over 80 scholarly articles on media ethics, privacy, and technology philosophy.
Advising and grants highlight his mentorship through undergraduate research apprenticeships and grants supporting projects like 'Ethics of Compassion and Journalism' and 'Little Cities of Black Diamonds.' He collaborates with local watershed groups and leads environmental field trips for students.
Professional activities include editorial roles for Journal of Media Ethics and Journalistik/Journalism Research. He is an active photographer focusing on environmental landscapes and a former journalist with freelance work in German newspapers since 1982.
