Dr. Aimee Edmondson is a Professor in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and Associate Dean at the Scripps College of Communication (Ohio University). She specializes in media law, civil rights-related libel, critical race theory, and data journalism. Her research emphasizes the intersection of press freedom and civil rights, particularly through the lens of legal history.
Edmondson holds a Ph.D. (2008) from the University of Missouri, an M.A. (1999) from the University of Memphis, and a B.A. (1990) from Louisiana State University’s Manship School of Journalism. Her landmark book, In Sullivan’s Shadow (2019), explores libel law’s role during the civil rights movement and was a finalist for the Frank Luther Mott/Kappa Tau Alpha award.
Her global outreach includes leading data journalism workshops in Kenya, China, Kazakhstan, India, and Germany. Edmondson combines academic rigor with hands-on experience, having worked as a journalist across diverse beats (politics, education, sports). She advocates for free expression while addressing ethical challenges in modern media.
Her farm in the Appalachian foothills reflects her commitment to sustainability and local food economies, alongside her journalism and teaching.
