Bill Reader is a Professor in the Department of Journalism at Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, housed within the Scripps College of Communication. He joined the faculty in 2002 and earned tenure in 2010, specializing in teaching news editing, media ethics, and community journalism. His professional background includes over a decade of newspaper work as a reporter, editor, and designer, culminating in World's Best Designed Newspapers awards (1998-2000) and Keystone Press Awards.
Education: M.A. in Media Studies from Pennsylvania State University. Previous academic roles included teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2000-2002) and Penn State (1998-2000). His research focuses on community journalism sustainability, participatory media practices, and applied ethics in audience feedback mechanisms. Major publications include Audience Feedback in the News Media (2015), Foundations of Community Journalism (2012), and contributions to scholarly encyclopedias.
His research articles explore topics like local news crises, anonymous online commentary ethics, and global community media ownership. Professional affiliations include leadership roles in AEJMC's Community Journalism Interest Group and the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues. Presentations span over 15 AEJMC conferences and national trainings for newspaper associations.
