Victoria LaPoe is a Professor at Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, focusing on digital media, media diversity, and Indigenous storytelling. She holds a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University and M.A./B.A. degrees from the University of Iowa. Her research explores health communication in Indigenous and mainstream media, media ethics, and social network analysis of political movements. She has authored books including Indian Country: Telling a Story in a Digital Age and Resistance Advocacy as News.
LaPoe’s service includes leadership roles in the Indigenous Journalists Association (formerly NAJA), serving as Board Vice President (2017-2019) and mentoring student journalists. She advises the Ohio University PRSSA chapter and co-edits the American Indian Media series. Her awards include the AEJMC’s Outstanding Woman in Journalism Education Award (2018) and a state-level AP Best Newscast award (2009).
Her research examines intersectionality in social media activism, representation of marginalized groups, and crisis communication during events like the 2020 pandemic. Recent work highlights Indigenous media’s role in pandemic reporting and challenges systemic stereotypes in media portrayals of Native communities. She advocates for ethical journalism practices and community-driven storytelling.
