Benjamin Hiramatsu Ireland

Dr. Benjamin Hiramatsu Ireland is an Associate Professor of French and Director of Asian Studies at Texas Christian University (TCU), with affiliations in the John V. Roach Honors College, Women and Gender Studies, Comparative Race & Ethnic Studies, and Middle East Studies programs. He holds a Ph.D. in French from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a B.A. in French and East Asian Studies (Phi Beta Kappa, High Honors) from Davidson College. His research focuses on French and Francophone literature, global business management, and transnational studies, with a particular emphasis on postcolonial and empire histories.

Dr. Ireland teaches French and Japanese language courses and oversees TCU’s Japanese language program. His humanitarian work has involved reuniting descendants of WWII Japanese internees in Australian camps with families in Japan, a project covered globally. He is completing an MBA in Finance at TCU’s Neeley School of Business, focusing on intercultural approaches to global finance. His forthcoming book, *Voices Beyond the Grave: Japanese Internment in the French Pacific* (2026), explores transnational WWII histories. He also serves on editorial boards for *Edinburgh University Press* and *Barthes Studies*, and directs TCU’s French immersion community, *La Maison Française*.
