Sheldon Garon is the Nissan Professor in Japanese Studies at Princeton University, with a joint appointment in the Department of East Asian Studies. A leading scholar in transnational history, he examines the flow of ideas and institutions between Asia, Europe, and the United States, particularly focusing on modern Japanese history and its global connections.

His research spans state-society relations, political economy, and total war mobilization, with notable work on civil defense systems during WWII. He has published widely on topics including transnational learning in air raid preparedness, gender roles in wartime, and comparative consumption patterns. Garon’s scholarship often highlights how nations like Japan, Germany, and Britain developed parallel systems for mobilizing civilians despite differing political regimes.
Recent projects include When Home Fronts Became Battlegrounds and the collaborative initiative The Global War on Civilians, 1905-1945, analyzing cross-border influences on home front strategies. His work has garnered international recognition, including the European Research Council Advanced Grant and Japan’s Spring 2025 Decoration.
He teaches courses on modern Japan, transnational fascism, aerial bombardment, and international studies, while advocating for curriculum internationalization at Princeton.
