Sheldon M. Garon is the Nissan Professor in Japanese Studies and Professor of History and East Asian Studies at Princeton University. His work bridges modern Japanese history and transnational/global history, emphasizing cross-border exchanges of ideas and institutions. Garon’s recent projects analyze the connected histories of saving/spending policies and wartime civil defense strategies across Japan, Europe, and the U.S.
Research Interests: Garon specializes in 20th-century Japanese history, transnational history, and total war studies. His book Beyond Our Means explores divergent financial behaviors between the U.S. and East Asian/European nations. Current research focuses on World War II home fronts, comparing aerial bombardment responses in Japan, Germany, and Britain.

Teaching and Leadership: Garon teaches courses on modern Japan, East Asia, and transnational seminars on fascism, gender, aerial bombardment, and political economy. He chaired Princeton’s Task Force on International Studies (2001–2003), leading to the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS), and directed the Global History Project under the Humboldt-Princeton Strategic Partnership.
