Cynthia Bisson is an Assistant Professor in the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences at Belmont University, where she has been a dedicated faculty member since 1987. Her academic home is rooted in historical studies with a strong transnational focus on Modern France and Modern Japan.
Her research interests center on Modern France and Modern Japan, with specific expertise in 19th-century French criminal justice, the French Revolution, Samurai history, and Japanese tea culture during the Meiji Era. She explores cultural intersections, particularly French perceptions of Japanese society in the late 19th century. Her teaching portfolio includes World History, Modern China, and a Survey of East Asian History, reflecting a broad regional and thematic engagement.
The publications and scholarly contributions reflect a consistent engagement with French and Japanese historical narratives, spanning biographical work on Napoleon Bonaparte, reference entries on WWII France, and critical book reviews. These works demonstrate a commitment to both public humanities and academic discourse in modern European and East Asian history.

As an educator, Cynthia Bisson has significantly expanded student learning through experiential education, leading multiple study-abroad trips to Japan since 2008. She has also presented lectures across Tennessee on Napoleon’s life for Humanities Tennessee, showcasing her dedication to public scholarship.
