Sarah Thal is the David Kuenzi and Mary Wyman Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Department of History. Her expertise centers on early modern and modern Japan, particularly the intersections of religious practices, social structures, and political transformations. She advises graduate students, including Larissa Redditt, and teaches a wide range of courses such as History 104 (East Asian History: Japan), History 200 (Film and Literature in Japanese History), and advanced seminars on Samurai, Shinto, and East Asian religious-political dynamics.

Research Interests: Thal’s work spans Shinto and kami worship, the Meiji Restoration, samurai ethics/bushido, local and environmental history, and aristocratic modernization. Her current project explores the evolving interpretations of Hagakure, analyzing its roles in wartime propaganda, masculinity ideals, and spiritual/managerial philosophy. This shows her focus on historical texts' cultural and ideological impacts across centuries.
