Dr. Benedict Douglas is an Associate Professor in Law at Durham Law School, affiliated with the Durham CELLS (Centre for Ethics and Law in the Life Sciences) and the Human Rights and Public Law Centre. He holds a PhD from Durham University, an LLM in Human Rights Law from University College London, and a First Class Law Degree from the University of Hull. His research focuses on constitutional law, human rights, phenomenology, and jurisprudence, particularly exploring the intersection of human dignity, duty-based legal frameworks, and the UK Constitution. His recent work uses phenomenology to critique constitutional structures against human nature.
His publications analyze the absence of dignity in UK human rights law, the moral basis of the UK Constitution, and the role of love in legal frameworks. He currently supervises PhD students Joy Twolome (phenomenology of human rights) and Mustafa Kamran (UN rights and human conscience). Teaching areas include Animal Law, Tort Law, and UK Constitutional Law. He maintains active research groups in ethics and law, and his hobbies include water sports and adventure activities.
