Dr. Benedict C. Albensi serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics at the University of Manitoba's College of Medicine and leads the Synaptic Plasticity and Cellular Memory Dysfunction Lab at St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre. Previously, he held the Manitoba Dementia Research Chair and Everett Endowment Fund Chair for Alzheimer's Research.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Utah Medical School (1995), followed by postdoctoral training at Georgetown University (developing MRI methods for head trauma) and the University of Kentucky's Sanders-Brown Center on Aging under Dr. Mark Mattson, where he first demonstrated NF-kB's essential role in mammalian synaptic plasticity.
Dr. Albensi's research investigates molecular mechanisms of memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and head trauma, with recent focus on early mitochondrial dysfunction and sex-based differences preceding classical AD pathology. His work centers on nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) as a critical link between inflammatory processes and memory formation.
Key recognitions include:
- Former Manitoba Dementia Research Chair
- Former Everett Endowment Fund Chair for Alzheimer's Research
- Top 1% global ranking by Expertscape.com (2010-2020) across seven neurodegenerative research domains
His laboratory employs multidisciplinary approaches including brain slice electrophysiology, behavioral assays (Morris water maze, Barnes maze), molecular techniques, PET/MRI neuroimaging, and computational modeling to identify therapeutic targets for memory disorders. The lab operates within St. Boniface Hospital's Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders with access to advanced equipment for cellular and molecular analysis.
