Ben Akrigg is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto’s Department of Classics, where he has taught Greek history since 2006. Previously, he was a lecturer in Greek history at King’s College London. He holds a BA in Literae Humaniores from the University of Oxford, an MA in Archaeology from Birkbeck College London, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge.
His research focuses on the economic and social history of archaic and classical Greece, with current projects exploring environmental change and economic development in antiquity. Collaborating with Katherine Blouin, he is co-editing a Handbook of Classics and Postcolonial Theory for Routledge, addressing colonialism’s impact on classical studies. His work bridges material culture analysis with interdisciplinary approaches to ancient societies.
Key publications include Population and Economy in Classical Athens (2019) and Slaves and Slavery in Ancient Greek Comic Drama (2013). His upcoming 2025 handbook rethinks classical scholarship through postcolonial frameworks.
