Professor Armand D’Angour is a Professor of Classics at the University of Oxford and a Fellow and Lecturer in Classics at Jesus College. He also serves as Editor of the Jesus Record. His academic journey includes a Performer’s diploma from the Royal College of Music (1976-9), followed by studies in Literae Humaniores at Merton College. After early careers in music and business, he returned to academia, earning a PhD from University College London in 1998.

His research focuses on ancient Greek language, poetry, music, and cultural history. Notable works include The Greeks and the New (2011), Music, Text, and Culture in Ancient Greece (2018, co-edited), Socrates in Love (2019), and How to Innovate (2021). He has reconstructed ancient Greek music, culminating in a widely viewed BBC4 documentary and a viral video presentation.
His articles explore themes like Greek musical systems, cultural innovation, and historical performance practices. Awards include a British Academy Fellowship (2013-2015).
Advising and grants: He led a British Academy-funded project on ancient Greek music. His work bridges academia and public engagement, with media collaborations and public lectures.
