Tom Phillips is a Senior Lecturer in Classical Literature at the University of Manchester. He holds a position in the Classics, Ancient History & Egyptology department. His research focuses on ancient Greek literature, particularly Pindar, Apollonius Rhodius, and Hellenistic poetry. He is known for his work on ancient literary scholarship and ecocritical approaches to classical texts. Phillips co-edited volumes on Greek lyric and music, and leads a collaborative project translating Iliad scholia. His teaching includes courses on Virgil’s Aeneid and the European pastoral tradition.
Education: Studied Literae Humaniores at Oxford, completed graduate work there, and joined Manchester in 2018.
Research interests include Greek lyric poetry (Sappho, Pindar, Horace), Hellenistic epic, and the reception of classical literature in the 18th century. Current projects explore Shelley’s engagement with ancient poetry through an ecocritical lens. Phillips emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating ancient aesthetics with Renaissance reception studies.
His publications span books, articles, and reviews, with a focus on textual analysis and cultural history. He collaborates on translating ancient commentaries, highlighting their role in Hellenistic and Imperial Greek culture.
