Dr Melinda Letts is a College Tutor in Greek and Latin Languages at Jesus College, University of Oxford, and Senior Member of the Oxford Ancient Languages Society and Chair of Oxford Latinitas. She holds an MA, MSt, and DPhil from Oxford (Oxon) and was awarded an OBE in 2003 for her leadership in UK health charities and public bodies. Her research focuses on the social history of ancient medicine, particularly the work of Rufus of Ephesus, and she advocates immersive language-teaching methods like Active Greek and Latin.
Education: BA Literae Humaniores at St Anne’s College, Oxford, followed by research assistantship under Prof. Keith Hopkins. She later worked in overseas development and health charities before returning to academia in 2009 for doctoral research at Christ Church, Oxford.
Research Interests: Health, illness, and medical practices in Greco-Roman antiquity; innovative language pedagogy for classical studies. She has pioneered Active Greek and Latin teaching, supported by a £30k alumni grant, to enhance accessibility and fluency in ancient languages.
Publications span translations of ancient medical texts, pedagogical strategies, and analyses of Rufus of Ephesus’s contributions to medical inquiry. Her work bridges ancient medical historiography with modern educational practices, emphasizing inclusivity in classical studies.
Awards: OBE (2003) for leadership in health and charity sectors. Grants: £30k over three years from John Jagger (Jesus College alumnus) for Active Language Programs.
Labs/Teams: Active involvement with Oxford Ancient Languages Society and Oxford Latinitas, promoting immersive language learning. She teaches undergraduates at Jesus College and collaborates with the Classics Faculty’s inter-collegiate language team.
