Graham J. Oliver is a Professor of Classics and History at Brown University. Previously, he held positions at the University of Liverpool (1994–2013) and completed his education at the University of Oxford (BA Literae Humaniores, 1989; D.Phil. Ancient History, 1995). His research focuses on Greek history, particularly epigraphy, Classical/Hellenistic periods, and the ancient economy. He has directed international graduate programs in epigraphy at Oxford and the British School at Athens.
Key research areas include Athenian political economy, the impact of warfare on urban centers, and the reception of ancient Greek culture in modern commemorative practices. Notable works include War, Food, and Politics in Early Hellenistic Athens (2007) and co-edited volumes like Cultures of Commemoration: War Memorials, Ancient and Modern (2012). He has held prestigious fellowships including the British School at Athens Visiting Fellowship (2012) and an Arts and Humanities Research Board Senior Research Fellowship (1999–2004).
Teaching specializations include ancient Greek history, literature, and epigraphy, with courses on topics like 'War and Society in Ancient Greece' and 'The Persian Empire and Achaemenid Culture.' He has secured research grants totaling over $200,000 for projects on Athenian epigraphy and cultural commemoration.
