Dr Belal Chami is a Senior Lecturer and biomedical researcher at the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre, specializing in Molecular Biomedicine. He leads the Redox & Inflammation group, investigating antioxidants, reactive oxygen species, and inflammation in chronic diseases like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). His work includes developing biomarkers and drug discovery strategies targeting myeloperoxidase (MPO) and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Dr Chami holds multiple awards, including the Litwin IBD Pioneers Award and BridgeTech Industry Fellowship.
Research focuses on IBD pathogenesis, MPO’s role in tissue injury, and clinical applications of rapid fecal assays. He collaborates with institutions like the Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation and the University of Sydney Nano Institute. Teaching roles include coordinating the Bachelor of Oral Health units and contributing to medical programs. Dr Chami has supervised over 30 students, with many achieving academic awards.
