Research Focus: Dr. Parkos investigates
- Mucosal inflammation mechanisms in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Neutrophil trafficking across intestinal epithelium
- Epithelial barrier dysfunction and repair
- Role of CD11b/CD18, CD47, SIRPα, and JAM family proteins
- Molecular regulation of leukocyte-epithelial interactions
- In vivo/ex vivo inflammation models
Scientific Contributions: His work has been instrumental in defining leukocyte migration dynamics across mucosal barriers, with over 189 publications in top journals (Nature, Cell, J Exp Med). He has held continuous NIH R01 funding since 1995 and served as President of the American Society for Investigative Pathology (2010–2011).
Mentorship & Leadership: Dr. Parkos has trained numerous graduate students and postdocs, many of whom hold prominent academic positions.
